You’re walking down a deserted trail when you feel a chill up your spine. Is that just the weather finally turning to fall or did a ghost cross your path? Millions of people are fascinated by the macabre and there’s no shortage of spooky destinations and eerie sites to give you goosebumps across the globe. Whether you’re a scary movie fanatic or just looking to get in the spirit of Halloween, these are some of the spookiest places to visit around the world.
Paris Catacombs, France
What could be more bone-chilling than a subterranean labyrinth filled with skeletons and skulls? Les Catacombes de Paris were the final resting place for many poor souls that called the City of Light home. As graveyards began to run out of room in the 1700s, residents needed to find a new place to bury the deceased. The solution lay underground, and over 6 million Parisians were buried in Les Catacombes. Today, visitors can explore part of these catacombs on a tour, descending beneath the city for an experience both haunting and historical.
Salem, Massachusetts
Once the site of the gruesome Salem Witch Trials, Salem, Massachusetts, draws in hundreds of tourists each autumn. It was in this town that 19 women were accused of witchcraft between 1962 and 1963. Take a tour of the town including the Witch House, one of the only remaining buildings that’s connected to the trials themselves, as well as Witch Trial Memorial and the Salem Witch Museum, all detailing the tragic history of the town and the mass hysteria that led to the infamous trials.
Alcatraz, California
Wander the icy halls of this island prison, once occupied by the most notorious criminals in America, and it won't take long before chills run up your spine. Machine Gun Kelly and Al Capone, among many other famous delinquents, called “The Rock” home at one point. Living conditions at Alcatraz were notoriously terrible with near constant inclement weather and brutal punishments before the prison shut down in 1963. If your imagination gets carried away during your visit, you wouldn’t be the first to claim that these barracks are haunted. A visit to Cell 14D reveals one of the most haunted sites in Alcatraz as a prisoner not only died within its walls but also claimed that a creature was trying to kill him.
Tower of London, England
As the site of some of London’s most grisly executions and battles, the Tower of London is a notoriously spooky destination. Around 13 ghosts are said to haunt these storied halls including historic figures like Guy Fawkes, Lady Jane Grey, and Anne Boleyn. See for yourself if the Tower is in fact haunted on a Tower Twilight Tour that’s led by one of the Yeoman Warders, once the monarchs personal protectors, themselves. Not only will you have special access to the Tower of London after hours but you’ll also get to experience it by night. Guests can uncover the Tower's less macabre side during the day, touring the Crown Jewels or roaming the grounds.
Sedlec Ossuary, Czech Republic
Sedlec Ossuary is an artful exhibit of skeletons decorating the interior of a small chapel in the Czech countryside. The bones you see adorning the archways are from almost 40,000 bubonic plague victims. Each bone was bleached and carved before being carefully placed around the church by a local artist in the 1800s. The chapel is spooky yet peaceful, and includes several displays worth seeing, like the grand chandelier, made from every bone in the human body. Located in the town of Kútna Hora, this isn’t the only church decorated in the deceased. The famous Brno Ossuary, and several others, are scattered around the country.
Bodie, California
Now a desolate ghost town an hour outside of Yosemite National Park, Bodie was once a Gold Rush camp turned thriving mining hamlet. As the gold began to wane, so did its residents and by the turn of the 20th century, almost all its residents had departed, leaving behind an entire town's worth of structures. While the town was once composed of almost 2,000 buildings, many were destroyed in two fires that spared only a smattering of structures including a church, general store, and a saloon. The Bodie ghost town is open year-round, despite its high elevation and heaps of snow come winter. Visitors can reach it by way of snowmobile or skis for an even more magical, if not slightly spooky, atmosphere. Be forewarned. Visitors who take something from the town are said to be cursed and it's best to keep your hands to yourself.
